We just got nominated for The Liebster Award 2018. Awards are special. When these come from a community that knows what it takes to do what we do, they are even more. In the summer of 2018, we had just moved to our new address – an idyllic cottage in the beautiful Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India, when we got this pleasant surprise. Liebster in German could mean dearest, sweetest, kindest, nicest, beloved, lovely, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. We are relatively young in the blogosphere and its amazing to get such kind words for doing simply what you love to. But, what is the award about?
What is The Liebster Award?
According to The Global Aussie, the award’s torch bearer, The Liebster Award is an award that exists only on the internet and is given to bloggers by other bloggers. The earliest case of the award goes as far back as 2011. Originally it was given out to blogs with less than 2000 readers but this has slowly been lowered as the reward gained in popularity. The threshold is now only 200 readers or less. However, it’s really an arbitrary number. If you like helping other blogs out, go ahead and do it regardless of its size. This year (2018), The Liebster Award prize will be a BioLite Camp Stove worth £150!
Our travelogue titled ‘Backpacking North East India: A Curious Journey’ made its first public appearance at the World Book Fair (New Delhi) earlier this year. We have been working the past 12-months to upgrade our multi-author website in anticipation of the book’s worldwide release and the hours were grueling, to say the least. To receive this nomination when we did, was perfect timing.
The Liebster Award – Discover and Support New Bloggers
Great content, unless it reaches the intended audience, rarely makes the cut. It took us over three years to complete the 300-page book project. That it is about the least explored North East India makes ‘being discovered’ an uphill task. However, when the reviews started to trickle in, it motivated us to continue what we do. Recognition is indeed the dearest, kindest, and is always welcome! We express our gratitude by proudly featuring some of the book reviewers and social media influencers.
Likewise, when we begin our journey in the blogosphere, our URL denotes a minuscule, an almost invisible, dot on the whole worldwide web. So, after we have crafted the best content that we can, whom do we showcase it to or ask for suggestions or see who else is doing awesome work? This is where The Liebster Award comes in – it is a way to be discovered, to connect with, and to support the blogging community – a great idea in promoting your own work and helping others.
The Liebster Award 2018 – How Does it Work?
Once you have been nominated for The Liebster Award, you should draft and publish a new post to:
- Announce your nomination and provide an overview of The Liebster Award
- List these rules with a link to the official blog post
- Describe what makes you passionate about blogging
- Introduce, thank, and link back to the blog that nominated you
- Answer the 11 questions given to you. Optionally, you may also write 10 random facts about yourself
- Create 11 more unique and creative questions for your nominees to answer
- Nominate 5-11 blogs for The Liebster Award 2018
- Display the The Liebster Award logo in your post and/or on your blog
- Share your post with your nominees to inform them of their nomination
- Return to official blog post and comment a link directly to your published Liebster award – to make it easy for the organizer to read them all and announce the winner
Note: Rules change every year. The Liebster Award 2018 rules requires you to answer 11 questions. However, we got only five questions in the nomination. So we chose to answer the official questions too. In other words, we respond to a total of 16 questions and offer a set of 11 to our nominees.
What Makes You Passionate About Blog Posting?
A big part of why we started the blog is who we are – a set of contradictions and more. We are minimalists and thrive on comforts. We are perfectionists and imperfect ourselves. We are divergent and mindful of social norms. We are inventive and seek continuity too. We are intuitive and spiritual and indulge in meticulously planning the trivial. We are easy-going and anxious about life-changes. Perhaps, there isn’t a contradiction that does not reside inside of us. We fulfill our curiosity, balancing these, one at a time. Likewise, we like to settle down and explore too.
Travel enriches our conversations and social lives. We love to share our experiences. And. If there’s anything that excites us more than sharing our travel story, it is sharing yours. Hence this platform.

Living by Leah Interviews Unakriti
What is your guilty pleasure?
Dark chocolate with hot black coffee. Bitter black coffee somewhat reduces the guilt. 🙂
If you could go back in time and change one event that happened to you, what would it be?
Nothing. Who we are today is the result of all that has happened. We gain new perspectives, we grow.
What has been your greatest setback in life and how did you overcome it?
The biggest setback to us is when we are unable to see an alternate perspective. Thankfully, as travelers, we have had and continue to have opportunities to overcome these.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
The one when we received gifts! 🙂
What is your favorite season of the year and why?
Spring – a season of renewal, growth and rejuvenation. It is characterized by harvest festivals, and new beginnings. Besides, it makes for a good season to travel too.
The Global Aussie Interviews Unakriti!
Out of all the countries, you have visited, which one did you like the most?
We have been backpacking for over 20 years. There’s no doubt every place offers something unique and meaningful and we have lots of fond memories. Of all the countries we have traveled to or lived in, India stands out for its diversity in almost everything – food, cultures, landscapes, wildlife, mountains, beaches, seasons and the list goes on. Especially, India’s North East has transformed us. We have since turned into travel writers. Our travelogue titled Backpacking North East India: A Curious Journey made its first public appearance at the World Book Fair (New Delhi), earlier this year.
For those who do not know, North East India comprises of eight states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura. The Himalayas and its waters define the region’s terrain, climate, rich biodiversity, and the peculiar indigenous lifestyles her people follow.
That North East India is bound by Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet to the north, Bangladesh to the south and west, and Myanmar to the east hints at the eclectic mix of cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity. This is where elements of Asia come together to do what they do best – cast a spell.
The region’s innate charms have remained under-explored. Travelers, who figure out how to backpack North East India, find gems such as Dzükou Valley all to themselves. Importantly, the hospitable people of the region make sure that visitors take back the choicest of memories.

What is the most extreme thing you have ever done?
If culinary extremes count, we have had piping-hot goat-blood soup 🙂
If you can take someone with you in your travels, who would it be?
We prefer to meet more of our tribe during our travels.
Bike or Train?
Train. It gives you an opportunity to meet the locals, witness the changing landscapes, and when its an overnight ride, save the cost of a hotel room!
What/Who inspires you to travel this world?
Travel strengthens our abilities to adapt to uncertainties. It’s just that we prefer to call it spontaneity.
What is the best memory that you have while travelling?
Best memories are those when we have a sense of discovery, a sense of adventure, or making lifelong friends out of complete strangers.
If you could give someone $1,000,000 who would you give it to?
We would invest it in a skill development facility. There’s a Chinese proverb “You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you give him an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime.”
Apple or Samsung?
Samsung. Its does the job and is cheaper.
What is the scariest thing you have experienced while travelling?
Almost stepping on a poisonous snake and resting next to a python during jungle hikes. Watch out for camouflaged creatures before its too late!
Name the top 3 most beautiful beaches you have visited:
- Om Beach, Gokarna, India
- Great Lakes, Michigan, USA
- Bako National Park, Borneo, Malaysia
How did travelling change your life?
Traveling has made us into story tellers. It remains work in progress.
